Several small adjustments may be performed on your computer that will speed up Windows XP and make the machine run faster and smoother.

1. Remove unneeded programs from the Startup process to speed up Windows XP. By making sure only programs that are needed are being loaded into RAM memory and run in the background. Removing items from the Startup process will help keep the computer from 'bogging down' with too many applications running at the same time in the background.

2. Disable User Access Control to speed up Windows. User Access Control (UAC) uses a considerable block of resources and many users find this feature annoying. 4. Tweak the Index Service. XP's new search features are also resource hogs. To do this, right-click on the C drive in Windows Explorer. Click on the 'General' tab. Uncheck the 'Index this Drive for Faster Searching' option.

5. Disable the side bar to speed up Windows XP. Though these gadgets and widgets are fun, they utilize a HUGE amount of resources. Right-click on the Windows Sidebar option in the system tray in the lower right corner. Select the option to disable.

6. Tweak your programs. Often, having several programs running at the same time is the culprit stealing resources in Windows XP. Sometimes, programs like image editors included with print drivers will run from startup, even when not in use. To speed up Windows XP, uninstall programs that you do not use.

7. Enable Advanced Performance on a SATA drive to speed up Windows. For whatever reason, this option is disabled by default. To do this, open the Device Manger by typing 'devmgmt.msc' from the command line. Go to the disk Drives tab. Right-click the SATA drive. Select Properties from the menu. Select the Policies tab. Check the 'Enable Advanced Performance' box.

8. To speed up Windows XP use of USB drives, repeat Step 7 but this time, open the 'Policies' tab for the USB drive. Select Optimize for Performance.
